Sir R. E. Stubbs was not at first inclined to
grant any increase and the matter was allowed to drop, but
after the Seamen's Strike, during which the Indians had
performed their duties loyally and indefatigably, he again
discussed the matter with the Captain Superintendent of
Police, the Treasurer, Mr. Fletcher and myself, and decided to grant an increase of 25.00 per month to all ranks up to
and including sergeants, and of $10.00 per month to the
higher ranks.
4.
The pensions of the Indian police will be
computed on this scale except in the case of 17 men who
joined prior to the 31st December, 1899, and are therefore
entitled to a privileged rate of pension at Rupees 200 to
£100. These seventeen, on being given the option, have
unanimously expressed a wish to retain this privilege, and
it has accordingly been decided that the pensions of these
men will be computed on their present rates of pay, though
they will, for the period of their service only, receive
the benefit of the additional £10.00 or £5.00 per month, as
the case may be. It is not possible at present to estimate
the increased expenditure on pensions that will result.
